Consolidation and Virtualization Bring Greater Efficiency, Savings to Federal Agency

Data Centers often grow by accumulation, with new components added over time, pushing facilities to their limits, consuming resources but often doing so inefficiently. A major federal government agency charged with national protection had encountered just such a growing problem. It had created an unsustainable data center environment, resulting in insufficient space, power, and cooling. Mohamed Elrefai "Cloud computing," once a buzz term with technology innovators, is starting to go mainstream; the concept is beginning to take shape and gain the attention of CIOs in business, healthcare, and government. Federal, state, and local government organizations alike are interested but concerned about migrating capabilities to "the cloud." But as aggressive players enter the market, as the acceptance of the cloud computing model increases and budget constraints force governments to look for IT savings wherever possible, the demand for cloud computing solutions grows. In fact, according to INPUT in its March 2009 report, Evolution of the Cloud: The Future of Cloud Computing in Government, estimates are that by FY2013 government spending on cloud computing will reach $800 million.
